Inhalation Toxicology

The Inhalation Toxicology Department at SafePharm has been in existence since 1985 and now conducts inhalation studies on over 100 test materials per year.

A large, purpose designed inhalation laboratory facility is incorporated into the Repeat-Dose Toxicology barrier maintained animal unit. This laboratory provides inhalation services for acute and repeated dose toxicity studies on a diverse range of test materials.

The technical team is highly experienced in atmosphere generation and control, having a proven record in meeting the most demanding regulatory requirements.

General Facilities

  • Dedicated, purpose built, inhalation exposure laboratory
  • Comprehensive analytical support
  • Independent containment of exposure chambers
  • Direct access to barrier maintained animal unit
  • High volume, respiratory quality air supply system
  • Exhaust air filtered through HEPA, activated carbon and, where appropriate, chemical specific filtration systems
Exposure

Our exposure facilities utilise, mainly, the ADG flow through nose-only exposure chambers and provide the following features:

  • Multi-species exposure; rats, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs can be exposed using the same systems
  • Exposure by other routes (dermal or by ingestion during grooming) is therefore minimised
  • Exposure periods ranging from a few minutes to 6 hours per day can be accommodated
  • Multiple tier chambers allow for a wide range of group sizes
  • Substantially lower test material usage compared with whole-body systems
  • Individual containment of exposure chambers prevents cross contamination and improves safety
  • Whole body enclosure also available for acute toxicity studies

Atmosphere Generation

  • Dust and liquid aerosols at low and high concentrations
  • Gases including low concentration, toxic gases
  • Vapours

Chamber Monitoring

Concentration

  • Gravimetric
  • Chemical analysis:
    • HPLC (Diode array, R.I. and fluorescence detection)
    • GC (with FID, NPD, ECD and FPD detectors)
    • Atomic absorption spectroscopy
    • Flame photometry
    • IR and UV/visiable spectrophotomtry
  • Laser photometer aerosol monitoring

Particle Size

  • Cascade impactor analysis
  • Electronic distribution plotting
Environmental

  • Electronic, remote recording of temperature, humidity and oxygen concentration
  • Continuous airflow monitoring
Special Expertise

  • Agrochemicals; EPA, EU and JMAFF requirements (including multiple active ingredient formulations)
  • Notification of new chemicals; gases, volatile liquids and respirable particulates
  • Emergency exposure studies; short exposure periods
  • Extreme (high and low) concentration atmospheres
  • Respiratory sensitisation
  • Inhalation potential studies – allow assessment of a potential hazard
  • Toxicity/Infecticvity studies – for microbial pest control agents
