Toxicology - Endpoint: Skin (Contact) Sensitisation
At the time
of writing, there are no validated non-animal tests for assessment
of skin sensitisation potential. However, advances in the
production and use of standardised reconstituted human epidermal
tissues have provided the means to investigate cytokine expression
in response to exposure to chemicals.
Such models are therefore being investigated
as possible screening tests for discerning between irritant
and sensitizing chemicals, depending upon the profile of cytokine
release1.
SPL routinely conducts skin sensitization
testing using the mouse local lymph node assay (LLNA) in accordance
with OECD Test Guideline 429 (2002) and Method B.42 of Annex
V to Directive 67/548/EEC (Council Directive 2004/73/EEC).
